In 2019, most people have experienced the dull buzz of a mobile phone notification or the generic, basic rumble of a game controller during gameplay. There is clearly a mismatch between the advanced audio-visual technologies featured in modern consumer devices and the dull, basic haptic feedback they deliver. Elevating haptics to the same standard requires a new approach.
Lofelt is spearheading development of a new generation of haptics with Lofelt Wave™. By combining audio-driven digital signal processing (DSP) with wideband actuators, Lofelt Wave delivers natural, realistic experiences – far surpassing the current hardware-only approach which is unable to capitalize on the full potential of using audio input to generate haptics.
Hardware-only solutions can’t easily filter out unwanted sound, reproduce subtle textures, or detect high-impact events. Noisy games, movies, sporting events, music and other content will cause the actuator to vibrate continuously, diminishing the overall impact of the haptic experience.
The Lofelt Wave DSP real-time signal flow incorporates analytics, noise reduction, frequency enhancement, dynamics enhancement and signal regulation components to optimize the audio signal, resulting in lifelike haptics.
Our latest white paper, Why digital signal processing is the key requirement for HD haptics, shows how incorporating software into haptic systems is critical for overcoming the limitations of hardware-only solutions to create immersive experiences.
